We are excited to return to North Carolina for a trip down the history rich Roanoke River! The headwaters of the Roanoke originate in the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern Virginia, but we’ll begin our river travel just below the fall line in northeastern North Carolina. In fact, the last set of rapids will be visible from our launch point near Roanoke Rapids, N.C.
We’ll cover 137 miles on Day One, following the river as it winds through a primarily rural setting until it eventually reaches Albemarle Sound. Much of our route will border the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, which consists of bottomland hardwoods and cypress swamps that come together to be what the Nature Conservancy calls one of the last great places. Along our route, you’re likely to have numerous sightings of the majestic American Bald Eagle as they soar above the river channel. The river is rich in history, and home to some of the oldest settlements and industry in our country. We’ll pass by towns such as Hamilton, founded in 1804 at the highest point along the rivers edge, and home to Fort Branch, which protected the upriver town of Weldon until the Civil War conflict ended. Also, the town of Plymouth, established in 1787, famous for many battles and the site where the ironclad warship CSS Albemarle sank.
Upon reaching Albemarle Sound, we’ll cross its most western section and arrive at our destination of Edenton, N.C. The town served as North Carolina’s capital from 1722 to 1743 and is loaded with beautifully restored buildings, homes, churches and the waterfront which is still the focal point. This will be our home for the next two nights and the Historic Inn property where we will stay includes a restored, relocated circa 1915 tobacco packing house (wow!) and a renovated circa 1900 Grand Victorian home, both converted to lodging and completely renovated. New ownership has brought the lodging and the on-site restaurant to a new level and we’ll sample some of their foodie fan favorites for dinner that evening.
Day Two begins with a full breakfast at the Inn and then we are off to explore the nearby Cashie (ca-shy) River for the day. It’s a beautiful, winding, blackwater river, lined with Cypress trees and bordered by the swamps that feed it. We’ll follow the 68 mile ride with lunch and get you back to the Inn for your afternoon nap or a stroll around town. Later that evening, the group will take a short walk into town for dinner near the waterfront to a favorite offers up a variety of seafood, steaks & pasta. Followed by a good night of rest and another full breakfast, we’ll be ready to begin our final day, which will take us back upriver to our start point in Weldon.
The Roanoke River truly is a a road less traveled and we are excited to share this 342-mile adventure on what is now a protected wilderness waterway.
